24-Hour Urine Creatinine Clearance Calculator

Calculate measured creatinine clearance (CrCl) using urine creatinine, serum creatinine, collected urine volume and collection duration. Optional tools estimate BSA-adjusted clearance and examine urine collection plausibility.

Calculate 24-Hour Urine Creatinine Clearance

Advanced options: age, sex, weight & height (optional)

Add age and sex for reference-interval context; weight for weight-normalized creatinine excretion; height and weight for BSA-adjusted CrCl. Reference comparisons are intended for adults.

Manual calculation is the default. Automatic updates occur only with valid values and will not scroll the page.

Collection quality matters: missing urine or inaccurate timing can substantially change measured CrCl.

Normal 24-Hour Creatinine Clearance Reference Ranges

These are general, commonly published adult values, not universal ranges for unindexed timed urinary CrCl. Laboratories may report BSA-standardized results, and their own reference intervals should take precedence.

PopulationGeneral CrCl valuesImportant limitation
Adult males97–137 mL/minConfirm laboratory indexing and age applicability
Adult females88–128 mL/minConfirm laboratory indexing and age applicability
Older adultsNo universal single rangeClearance generally declines with age; do not apply an automatic per-decade correction

BSA-indexed creatinine clearance

When height and weight are provided, the calculator reports an additional BSA-indexed result in mL/min/1.73 m². No universal age- and sex-specific BSA-indexed reference table is applied: compare with the reference interval reported by the laboratory, using the same indexing convention. BSA-indexed creatinine clearance is not the same measurement as eGFR.

Expected 24-hour urinary creatinine excretion

PopulationGeneral weight-normalized reference values
Adult males14–26 mg/kg/24 h
Adult females11–20 mg/kg/24 h

How Does the 24-Hour Urine Creatinine Clearance Calculator Work?

Measured creatinine clearance uses urine creatinine concentration, urine volume per minute and serum creatinine concentration from a corresponding collection period:

CrCl (mL/min) = [Urine creatinine × (Urine volume ÷ collection time in minutes)] ÷ Serum creatinine.

Urine and serum creatinine must first be converted to the same concentration units. Urine creatinine may be entered in mg/dL, mg/L (divide by 10 to obtain mg/dL), or mmol/L; serum creatinine may be entered in mg/dL or µmol/L.

Worked Example

Urine creatinine = 100 mg/dL; serum creatinine = 1.0 mg/dL; total urine volume = 1500 mL; collection duration = 24 hours. Urine flow = 1500 ÷ 1440 = 1.0417 mL/min. Therefore, CrCl = 100 × 1.0417 ÷ 1.0 = 104.2 mL/min (unindexed). Select “Load Example” above to reproduce it.

Measured CrCl vs Cockcroft–Gault vs eGFR

MethodUrine collection?What it reports
Timed urine CrClYesMeasured urinary creatinine clearance (mL/min); optional BSA indexing
Cockcroft–GaultNoEstimated creatinine clearance based on serum creatinine and patient characteristics
eGFRNoEstimated glomerular filtration rate, typically mL/min/1.73 m²

Measured CrCl is not interchangeable with a reference-method measured GFR or CKD-EPI eGFR. For more about body-size adjustment, see our BSA Calculator and guide to body surface area.

Collection adequacy and limitations

The optional age, sex and weight inputs help contextualize daily urinary creatinine excretion. A value outside a broad reference interval may prompt review of collection timing, missed voids, weight and body composition; a value within the interval does not prove completeness. Frailty, sarcopenia, diet, unusual muscle mass and kidney dysfunction can influence excretion.

  • Incomplete or excessive urine collection may bias clearance.
  • Creatinine tubular secretion means CrCl may exceed true GFR.
  • Rapid changes in kidney function can invalidate steady-state assumptions.
  • BSA-indexed and unindexed clearance have different units and clinical uses.
  • CKD staging requires appropriate GFR assessment, albuminuria and chronicity; do not infer a CKD G-stage from urine CrCl alone.
