Healing Sums: A Structured Addition Game for Cognitive Skill Enhancement

Healing Sums: A Structured Addition Game for Cognitive Skill Enhancement

Healing Sums is a fun addition game designed to support cognitive training through timed, choice-based challenges. Whether you are a student practicing mental math, a parent helping a child build number sense, or a clinician looking for a simple attention-and-reaction activity, Healing Sums offers a structured and measurable way to train core skills—without feeling like “homework.”

What is Healing Sums?

Healing Sums is a digital rehabilitation game that presents an addition problem and asks the player to select the correct answer from multiple options. The game uses a timer for every question and encourages quick, confident decisions. This style of play can help train sustained attention, working memory, processing speed, and goal-directed behavior—skills that are frequently targeted during cognitive rehabilitation and academic remediation. The design is friendly, bright, and easy to use across mobile, tablet, and desktop devices.

Three difficulty modes for progressive training in Healing Sums

The game includes three levels so players can start comfortably and progress gradually:

  • Easy: single-digit + single-digit (example: 4 + 4)
  • Moderate: single-digit + double-digit or double-digit + double-digit (example: 3 + 54, 37 + 77)
  • Hard: triple-digit + triple-digit or double-digit + triple-digit (example: 110 + 342, 68 + 435)

Each mode is linked to an appropriate timer, keeping the task challenging but realistic. Players can also choose the number of attempts (10, 15, or 20), which makes Healing Sums suitable for short sessions, home practice, classroom breaks, or clinic-based training.

Why the timer and multiple options matter in Healing Sums

Timed tasks can improve task engagement and help build mental flexibility. The presence of multiple options requires the player to suppress impulsive choices, compare values, and commit to one answer. Over time, this can support better speed–accuracy balance. Healing Sums also awards a bonus point when a correct answer is selected in less than 50% of the allowed time, encouraging efficient processing without forcing reckless guessing.

Scoring and SMHS Score (Sensing Medicine Healing Sum Score)

Each correct response earns 10 points. If the player answers quickly enough (within half of the time limit), they receive an additional +1 bonus point. The maximum possible score is calculated as: (Attempts × 10) + (Attempts). The SMHS Score is then computed as: (Total Score ÷ Maximum Possible Score) × 100. This provides a simple percentage metric that can be tracked over repeated sessions to observe improvement or consistency.

Clinical tip: Use Healing Sums in short, repeated practice blocks (for example, 10 attempts daily) and compare SMHS scores over time. This is often more meaningful than a single long session.

Who can benefit by playing Healing Sums?

Healing Sums can be used by developing children, students, adults seeking cognitive fitness, and individuals undergoing neurorehabilitation. It can also be used for simple fun and skill-testing. The game is designed to be easy to start, with optional patient ID and age fields that can help organize sessions in a clinical or educational setting.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
FAQs

What is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation?

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry, is an allopathic medical specialty that involves restoring function for a person who has been disabled by disease, disorder, or injury. It provides integrated, multidisciplinary care addressing physical, emotional, medical, vocational, and social needs.

Who is a “Physiatrist”?

A physiatrist is a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. (In India: MBBS followed by MD/DNB in PMR.)

What is Rehabilitation?

Rehabilitation is the process of helping a person achieve the highest level of function, independence, and quality of life possible. It does not undo damage but restores optimal health, functioning, and well-being.

Is PM&R only for people with disabilities?

No. PM&R serves anyone experiencing a decline in physical function—from athletes with injuries to elderly individuals recovering from surgery, falls, or pain.

Can physiatrists perform surgery?

Yes. In India, physiatrists perform rehabilitation surgeries such as deformity corrections, tendon transfers, and revision of amputations.

How does PM&R help in managing chronic pain?

Physiatrists use a multimodal approach—evaluation, diagnosis, medication, therapy, injections (e.g., nerve blocks, trigger point/joint injections), and lifestyle modifications—to reduce pain and improve daily function.

What conditions do physiatrists treat?

Common conditions include stroke, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, amputations, sports injuries, chronic musculoskeletal pain, post-surgical rehabilitation, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and more.
