WHOQOL-BREF – Frequently Asked Questions
What is WHOQOL-BREF?
WHOQOL-BREF is a 26-item questionnaire developed by the World Health Organization to measure quality of life across four domains: Physical Health, Psychological, Social Relationships, and Environment.
How many items and domains are included?
It includes 26 questions—24 covering four domains and 2 general questions about overall quality of life and general health.
How are scores calculated?
Each item is rated on a 1–5 scale. Raw domain scores are calculated per WHO instructions and transformed to a 4–20 or 0–100 scale for interpretation.
Are some items reverse-scored?
Yes. Negatively phrased items are reverse-coded before computing domain scores, following WHO scoring guidance.
What does a higher score indicate?
Higher scores indicate a better perceived quality of life in that domain.
Can the WHOQOL-BREF be used for diagnosis?
No. It is a quality-of-life assessment instrument, not a diagnostic test. Results should not replace clinical evaluation.
In which languages is it available?
WHOQOL-BREF has been officially translated into multiple languages by WHO. The original English version remains the authentic reference.
Who developed and owns WHOQOL-BREF?
The World Health Organization (WHO) developed and holds copyright for WHOQOL-BREF. It is distributed under WHO licensing terms.
Where can I find official information?
Official materials and scoring instructions are available at https://www.who.int/tools/whoqol/whoqol-bref.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
FAQs
What is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation?
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry, is an allopathic medical specialty that involves restoring function for a person who has been disabled by disease, disorder, or injury. It provides integrated, multidisciplinary care addressing physical, emotional, medical, vocational, and social needs.
Who is a “Physiatrist”?
A physiatrist is a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. (In India: MBBS followed by MD/DNB in PMR.)
What is Rehabilitation?
Rehabilitation is the process of helping a person achieve the highest level of function, independence, and quality of life possible. It does not undo damage but restores optimal health, functioning, and well-being.
Is PM&R only for people with disabilities?
No. PM&R serves anyone experiencing a decline in physical function—from athletes with injuries to elderly individuals recovering from surgery, falls, or pain.
Can physiatrists perform surgery?
Yes. In India, physiatrists perform rehabilitation surgeries such as deformity corrections, tendon transfers, and revision of amputations.
How does PM&R help in managing chronic pain?
Physiatrists use a multimodal approach—evaluation, diagnosis, medication, therapy, injections (e.g., nerve blocks, trigger point/joint injections), and lifestyle modifications—to reduce pain and improve daily function.
What conditions do physiatrists treat?
Common conditions include stroke, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, amputations, sports injuries, chronic musculoskeletal pain, post-surgical rehabilitation, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and more.
